ABOUT: Project Harmony is a free after-school music program operated by the Charlotte Symphony and Arts + aimed at building pathways to success for low-income elementary school children. Project Harmony creates social transformation through music by engaging children in orchestra programs that foster skill development and personal empowerment. While the program currently serves children in grades 2-5, the program is designed to grow into a full-scale K-12 program in the future. Project Harmony was inspired by the “revolutionary music-for-social-change organization,” El Sistema, which began in Venezuela in 1975. Since 2017, Arts+ and Charlotte Symphony Orchestra have partnered to offer the program. Classes are held two to three times each week where participants are instructed by professional teachers and collegiate music interns, forming mentor/mentee relationships. The program currently hosts in four neighborhoods across Charlotte: Winterfield, Montclair South, West Charlotte, and West Sugar Creek.
